Friday-No School

Due to the predicted cold temperatures, school will be closed tomorrow, Friday, January 23. There is no alternate learning planned or E-Learning. Enjoy the day off and stay warm!

All evening activities are cancelled including the BHS Boys Basketball Game. That game will be rescheduled for Saturday, January 31 at 4:00 after the BHS Girls Basketball Game.

Thank you for helping keep our students, families, and staff as healthy as possible. With illnesses spreading, we’re being especially cautious. While it can be frustrating, following the policy helps prevent wider outbreaks and keeps students in school overall.

Brimfield applies the same health guidelines to every student. When a child shows symptoms outlined in our policy, we have to follow those steps, even if the child is usually healthy or eager to stay home. Brimfield doesn’t try to determine whether a student is ‘faking’ or not. If a child reports or shows symptoms that meet our health guidelines, we respond according to policy to ensure everyone’s well-being.

Good afternoon Brimfield,

Next week, our grade levels will compete against one another in a variety of Homecoming activities to earn points toward the Homecoming title. Points can be earned through lunch and gym activities, dress-up day participation, creating the most entertaining skit, and designing a fun and vibrant class poster.

The Homecoming Dance will be held on Saturday from 7:00–10:00 p.m. Tickets are $20 and will go on sale during lunch on Monday. If a BHS student plans to bring a date who does not attend BHS, an approved dance permission form must be on file by Wednesday.

Our Homecoming basketball game will be held on Friday vs. Lewistown. This game will also serve as our Buckets for Bizosky Boys’ Basketball Memorial Game. We hope to see you there in support of our students and community.

Homecoming Dress-Up Days

  • Tuesday, 1/20 – Pajama Day

  • Wednesday, 1/21 – Blackout Day (wear black)

  • Thursday, 1/22 – Adam Sandler Day

  • Friday, 1/23 – Wear your Grant shirts (or wear blue)

Community Service Graduation Requirement

As part of our first goal of being decent human beings, BHS is bringing back a longstanding tradition. Beginning with the 2026–2027 school year, students will be required to complete community service hours as a graduation requirement.

Students will be expected to complete an average of 10 hours per school year, resulting in:

  • 40 hours for incoming freshmen by graduation

  • 30 hours for next year’s sophomores by graduation

  • 20 hours for next year’s juniors by graduation

  • 10 hours for next year’s seniors by graduation

A community service tracking form was shared with students this week so they may begin earning hours now if they wish. Completed forms should be submitted to grade-level sponsors and will be placed in students’ cumulative files for safekeeping.

Scheduling Update

Scheduling continues to move quickly at BHS. Our original goal was to have current sophomore schedules completed by mid-February and current freshman schedules completed by mid-March—and we are happy to report that we are ahead of schedule.

All current juniors and sophomores have already received their schedules for next school year. Sophomores received their junior schedules on Wednesday, and many took advantage of the new Advanced Placement opportunities being offered. Registration materials for current freshmen will be distributed in early February.

Attendance Reminder

Please help us maintain strong attendance by scheduling appointments and trips outside the school day whenever possible. The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) factors attendance and chronic absenteeism into school ratings, and all absences—excused or unexcused—count toward that calculation.

That said, we understand we are in the midst of flu season. If your student is running a fever or experiencing flu-like symptoms, they should remain home.

ACT / PreACT Testing Date

Please mark your calendars: the state-required ACT for juniors and PreACT for freshmen and sophomores will take place on Friday, April 24. Seniors will not be in attendance on this day. It is critical that all freshmen, sophomores, and juniors are present and on time. We will continue to send reminders as the date approaches.

Upcoming Events

  • Monday, 1/19 – MLK Jr. Day (No School)

  • Tuesday, 1/20 – ICC Placement Test Sign-Up Deadline

  • Friday, 1/23 – Homecoming Basketball vs. Lewistown / Bizosky Memorial Game

  • Saturday, 1/24 – Homecoming Dance (7:00–10:00 p.m.)

  • Thursday, 1/29 – Football/NFL-Themed Dress-Up Day

  • Friday, 1/30 – FCA (Before School, Library)

  • Monday, 2/2 – Girls’ Basketball vs. Elmwood / Bizosky Memorial Game

  • Thursday, 2/5 – ICC Accuplacer Test (for signed-up students)

  • Thursday, 2/19 – Squad/Team-Themed Dress-Up Day

  • Wednesday, 2/25 – AI in Our Lives Community Night, 6:00 p.m. (BHS Commons)

  • Monday, 2/26 – Presidents’ Day (No School)

On behalf of the entire BHS staff, thank you for your continued support. Have a wonderful weekend, and #Shape309!

Good afternoon Brimfield Families,

It has been great getting back into the swing of things at BHS this week. Students and teachers hit the ground running and are already well underway in second semester. As parents of high school students, you know—or will soon discover—that second semester flies by.

Community Service Graduation Requirement

As part of our first goal of being decent human beings, BHS is bringing back an important tradition. Beginning with the 2026–2027 school year, students will be required to complete community service hours as a graduation requirement.

Students will be expected to average 10 hours of community service per school year, resulting in the following totals by graduation:

Incoming freshmen: 40 hours
Incoming sophomores: 30 hours
Incoming juniors: 20 hours
Incoming seniors: 10 hours

A tracking form will be shared with students so they may begin earning service hours now if they wish. Completed hours will be submitted to grade-level sponsors for documentation. These forms will be shared with students and families soon.

Student Scheduling
Scheduling season is underway—even though it’s only January—as we plan for the 2026–2027 school year. This week, all current juniors received their senior schedules. Today, all sophomores received registration sheets to select classes for their junior year. These forms should be signed and returned next week.

Our goal is to complete:

Junior schedules by mid-February
Sophomore schedules by mid-March

We continue to expand our offerings, including additional dual credit courses and Advanced Placement options, which are available to juniors and seniors and are listed on the junior registration sheets.

Attendance Update
BHS has a daily attendance goal of 95%, and we are proud to share that we exceeded that goal first semester with an average daily attendance rate of 95.75%.

Individually, students should aim to maintain:

At least 95% attendance
No lower than 90% attendance

After first semester:

172 students maintained attendance above 90%
16 students are currently below 90% (5 freshmen, 8 sophomores, 2 juniors, and 1 senior)

Please note that students must maintain a minimum of 90% attendance to participate in BHS extracurricular activities, including dances. Our current chronic absentee rate is 8.5%, and we would like to reduce this as much as possible.

We ask for your support by scheduling trips and appointments outside the school day whenever possible. The Illinois State Board of Education includes attendance and chronic absenteeism in school ratings, and all absences—excused or unexcused—count toward these measures. With your help, we can continue to keep BHS among Illinois’s top-performing schools.

State Testing Date – Please Mark Your Calendars
The state-required ACT for juniors and PreACT for freshmen and sophomores will take place on Friday, April 24. Seniors will not be in attendance that day. It is critical that all freshmen, sophomores, and juniors are present and on time.
We will continue to send reminders as the date approaches.

On behalf of the entire BHS staff, thank you for your continued support. Have a wonderful weekend, and #Shape309!

Sincerely,
Marcy Steele
