Good afternoon Brimfield Families,
It has been great getting back into the swing of things at BHS this week. Students and teachers hit the ground running and are already well underway in second semester. As parents of high school students, you know—or will soon discover—that second semester flies by.
Community Service Graduation Requirement
As part of our first goal of being decent human beings, BHS is bringing back an important tradition. Beginning with the 2026–2027 school year, students will be required to complete community service hours as a graduation requirement.
Students will be expected to average 10 hours of community service per school year, resulting in the following totals by graduation:
Incoming freshmen: 40 hours
Incoming sophomores: 30 hours
Incoming juniors: 20 hours
Incoming seniors: 10 hours
A tracking form will be shared with students so they may begin earning service hours now if they wish. Completed hours will be submitted to grade-level sponsors for documentation. These forms will be shared with students and families soon.
Student Scheduling
Scheduling season is underway—even though it’s only January—as we plan for the 2026–2027 school year. This week, all current juniors received their senior schedules. Today, all sophomores received registration sheets to select classes for their junior year. These forms should be signed and returned next week.
Our goal is to complete:
Junior schedules by mid-February
Sophomore schedules by mid-March
We continue to expand our offerings, including additional dual credit courses and Advanced Placement options, which are available to juniors and seniors and are listed on the junior registration sheets.
Attendance Update
BHS has a daily attendance goal of 95%, and we are proud to share that we exceeded that goal first semester with an average daily attendance rate of 95.75%.
Individually, students should aim to maintain:
At least 95% attendance
No lower than 90% attendance
After first semester:
172 students maintained attendance above 90%
16 students are currently below 90% (5 freshmen, 8 sophomores, 2 juniors, and 1 senior)
Please note that students must maintain a minimum of 90% attendance to participate in BHS extracurricular activities, including dances. Our current chronic absentee rate is 8.5%, and we would like to reduce this as much as possible.
We ask for your support by scheduling trips and appointments outside the school day whenever possible. The Illinois State Board of Education includes attendance and chronic absenteeism in school ratings, and all absences—excused or unexcused—count toward these measures. With your help, we can continue to keep BHS among Illinois’s top-performing schools.
State Testing Date – Please Mark Your Calendars
The state-required ACT for juniors and PreACT for freshmen and sophomores will take place on Friday, April 24. Seniors will not be in attendance that day. It is critical that all freshmen, sophomores, and juniors are present and on time.
We will continue to send reminders as the date approaches.
