On Tuesday Mrs. Forney, Mrs. Walker, Mrs. McGrath and Mrs. Loser participated in an all day training with Krista Leh called SEL Integration.  ⭐Often times when we hear SEL (Social Emotional Learning) we think about relationships and feelings. SEL is not a program but a set of skills all humans need to "Be Decent Human Beings".⭐ ✏️No matter how long a class is, what age, or topic these skills can be acknowledged and brought to life. ✏️Skills like understanding others perspectives, communicating effectively, being open minded and curious, problem solving, teamwork, goal setting, responsible decision making, and many others. ✏️Learning physically cannot happen, based on brain research, if we are not regulated. To learn a person needs to be in the cortex of their brain and to do this people need to feel safe, connected, and regulated.  ✏️Today was spent recognizing easy ways to do this.

Today a group of BGS staff participated in K-12 math instructional PD on the importance of using manipulations at all grade levels! We learned about CRA... concrete (physical objects/manipulatives), representation (drawing pictures to represent math ideas/problems, and abstract (mental thinking and problem solving) and then explaining our thinking and reasoning. Mrs. Walker (reading and math interventionist k-8), Mrs. Dawson (math interventionist), Mr. Kruiswyk (8th grade math teacher), and Ms. Albritton had a great day exploring opportunities for BGS students in math!

Teachers are still learning over the summer. Mrs. Albritton, Mrs. Walker, Mrs. Shoff, Mrs. Norman, Mrs. Loser, and Mrs. Fraelle attended Brain Based Classrooms with Stephanie Brown. Biggest takeaways: ⭐In order for students and adults to be able to learn, reflect, and take in information we need to be in our cortex. To be there we need to be regulated. ⭐Regulate, Relate, Reason This is the sequence we need in order to be an optimal learner ⭐Kids are not giving you a hardtime they are just having a hard time ⭐To help patterns of stress make sure your classroom is predictable, moderate, and controllable ⭐People want your energy not your time ⭐Humans remember 55% of your facial expressions, 38% of your tone, and only 5% of your words ⭐I'm going to be part of the solution. You chose how YOU show up!
