Art I
Course Description: In Art I, basic skills such as color theory and the elements of art are learned, studied, and reviewed. The students experiment with various forms of art including drawing, painting, sculpture, and ceramics. In Art I, students work both individually and in small cooperative learning groups.
Homework: In Art I, there is not a great deal of out of class homework, unless the in class deadlines are not being met. Sketchbooks, however, are almost entirely out of class assignments. Each sketchbook is worth 10 points and requires six to eight new entries each time it is due. The other exception is the written papers. One paper will be due each semester and the preparation for these writing samples will take place almost entirely outside of class.
Grading: Generally speaking, all art projects are worth 48 points. These points are divided into several categories. Some such categories are overall product (guidelines and quality), art process (time management and effort), and presentation (content, delivery, critique, and listening). Art I has several projects due over a grading period, which allows for a large accumulation of points. Other ways students may gain points are through sketchbooks, participation, and writing assignments.
Late Grade Policy: All projects are worth 48 points or 100%
ONE class period late = -3 points (94%)
TWO class periods late = -6 points (88%)
THREE class periods late = -9 points (81%)
FOUR class periods late = -11 points (77%)
After the fourth class period late, projects will no longer be accepted.
Sketchbooks = 10 points (100%)
ONE class period late = 7 points (70%)
After one class period late, sketchbooks will no longer be accepted.
Quarter Grades: Quarter grades are based on the percentage earned through an accumulation of points from projects, quizzes, written assignments, and sketchbooks. (Examples: 223/250 = 89%)
Semester Test: Semester tests are worth 1/5 of the overall grade.
