Reading For Understanding

October 19, 2006

Reading for Understanding is a new class this year. At the beginning of the school year, tests are administered in order to determine which reading skills will be taught in the course. The curriculum of this course is tailored directly to the needs of the students in the class.

Class periods are structured into three sections: word study, fluency practice, and time to read and develop comprehension skills using a wide variety of reading material.

Word Study

Students learn strategies to develop word recognition skills and expand their knowledge of vocabulary.

Fluency

Reading with fluency allows the student to read with deeper understanding. Students develop fluency through repeated readings using reader's theatre scripts.

Comprehension

Students develop better comprehension from exposure to a wide variety of reading material. Good comprehension depends on a student's knowledge of vocabulary and their overall knowledge from previous readings, content from their classes, and personal interests.
