We The People Grant

We're happy to announce that the BGS Library is one of 3000 libraries across the country to receive this year's Bookshelf, a set of seventeen books on the theme of "Created Equal." The grant, awarded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, also included four titles in Spanish, as well as the "History in a Box", a resource kit on Abraham Lincoln created by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History to use in our school during the coming year's Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial.
Through stories told in this year's We The People Bookshelf, students will have the opportunity to examine the central tenet of our American identity: that all human beings "are created equal." The books are chosen to engage young readers and help young people learn more about events, people, places, and ideas in American history. The Bookshelf program is part of the Endowment's We the People initiative, which supports projects that strengthen the teaching, study, and understanding of American history and culture.
During the 2008-2009 school year, the materials will be book-talked during weekly library classes at appropriate levels, be available for check-out, and be on display during History Month, as well as being used as a springboard for class discussions of the theme "Created Equal."
